Global Perspectives of Freedom: Juneteenth Introduction to International Students

Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the U.S. commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, but what might Juneteenth mean for international students? What is the distinction of celebrating freedom under the context of Juneteenth versus the 4th of July? Join Intercultural Programs (ICP) as we interview Sabrina Gillo, UT Dallas McDermott Library Instruction Librarian, to discuss global perspectives of freedom and dive into the history of Juneteenth for international students.

2025 Bruce August Jr. Juneteenth Day of Service

Join the Office of Student Volunteerism to celebrate Juneteenth at the 2025 Bruce August Jr. Juneteenth Day of Service!

This service project is named in memory of Bruce August Jr., a UTD alumnus and former Director of the UTD Multicultural Center, who sadly passed away in 2023. Bruce had personal family ties to the original Juneteenth and was a catalyst for ensuring UTD recognized Juneteenth annually. We honor his spirit by bringing people together to celebrate Juneteenth through three of Bruce’s favorite things: Service, Community, and Food.

For this project, Comets will travel to Feed My Starving Children’s site in Richardson, where they will pack meals to be distributed to global communities facing food insecurity.

Transportation to and from the facility will be provided. Transportation times are included in the event. Participants will meet in Artemis Hall (SU 2.905) before leaving for the project.

Light breakfast refreshments will be provided to volunteers before departing for the project (while supplies last).

Register now and join your fellow Comets in celebrating Juneteenth and combating food insecurity in our local communities!

Juneteenth Celebration

Students, faculty and staff are invited to come celebrate Juneteenth at UT Dallas!

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
